FF 0.2 Understanding Group Dynamics and Decision Making

One key role of the facilitator is to identify the dynamics that develop when people interact with one another and to help group manage those dynamics. Dysfunctional dynamics have a negative impact on group members, hindering their ability to work together, and undermine the facilitator's best efforts to create a comfortable, productive work climate (open, trusting, safe) and to help members progress through their task work (content, agenda, outcomes).

It is important for facilitators to know how people learn because such knowledge influences the quality of facilitation, especially in theses areas: 

• The presentation of information
• The generation and processing of data
• The use of participant resources
• The use of different media and ways of working on group tasks

Organizations are rapidly changing and everyone's getting involved! Change efforts today are guided and shaped by lessons learned over the past 30 years of trial and error in planned organization change. Three lessons have taken hold:

1. Participation is important.
2. Teams generally perform better than individuals.
3. Process (how something is done) affects outcome (what is accomplished).
